Minister Alexandre Monteiro says Cape Verde is moving safely towards decarbonization

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, believes that, despite successive crises, the country is making steady progress towards decarbonization and is convinced that it will reach the target of 50% renewable energy by 2030.

During his speech at the third meeting of the Steering Committee (COPIL) of the Energy Transition Support Programme, which took place on 7th March in Praia, he pointed that in an island country like Cape Verde, where the energy market is small-scale, the energy transition poses challenges that require innovative solutions in terms of financing and infrastructure.

He added that despite the challenging context, aggravated by successive crises in recent years, Cape Verde is making steady progress towards decarbonizing the country and is convinced that it can exceed 50% of electricity produced from renewable sources by 2030 and reach 100% by 2040. This confidence, according to Alexandre Monteiro, is based on the potential of the country's renewable resources, namely the sun, wind and sea, which are available in abundant quality and quantity.
