ALER participates in Workshop on Decentralised Generation

A workshop on Decentralised Power Generation was held at the Polana Hotel in Maputo, Mozambique, from March 13th to 16th.

The objective of this workshop was to increase knowledge about distributed generation in the Mozambican energy sector, highlighting its potential in accordance with the New Electricity Law.

With an attendance of over 30 participants, including ALER Associates, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and Energy Fund (FUNAE), the Energy Regulatory Authority (ARENE) and the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), the workshop was promoted by GET.Transform and GET.invest.

With the global shift towards greater decentralisation in power systems, there is an increasing focus on distributed generation and on unlocking the various benefits this could bring. Benefits that include a cost reduction for users and utilities and a decrease in the carbon intensity of electricity generation. However, the implementation of distributed generation requires carefully crafted policies and regulations to ensure that it brings benefits to all players in the energy sector.

To this end, this workshop focused on clarifying concepts and tariffs applicable in the distributed generation segment, while highlighting best practices and examples from other jurisdictions to demonstrate how regulations may need to change and adapt to ensure that the opportunities that distributed generation can offer Mozambique are taken advantage of.

The next step will consist of developing a white paper on the topic, in which recommendations for actions to be taken by stakeholders will be presented.
