II Meeting of the CPLP Energy Ministers

The ministers responsible for energy in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) and its representatives from Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé e Príncipe and East Timor met in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil on the 22ndof November 2017, for the II Meeting of the CPLP Energy Ministers.

 

The outcome of the meeting was the signature by all Member States of a joint statement in which they agree to promote the increase use of renewable energies and energy efficiency to diversify the energy mix and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 

 

During the meeting the Energy Strategic Cooperation Plan for 2018-2023 and the Action Plan for the 2018-2019 biennium were also approved, containing the guidelines for future CPLP cooperation in the energy sector.

 

These plans foreseen several activities, namely:

  • Setting up an online portal dedicated to energy until October 2018, acting as an important tool to disseminate the Member States’ energy activities, thus promoting and giving more visibility to each country’s activities.
  • Promotion of a multilateral funds workshop foreseen for July 2019, bringing together the major international development agencies to prospect alternative financing sources for energy sector activities of the Member States
  • Promotion of the II Energy Conference for the Development of CPLP, bringing together Governmental bodies, private companies and the academic community to present and discuss the energy related subjects concerning the CPLP Member States.

 

Additionally, the Ministers and its representatives also decided to create, on the CPLP context, a working group to share different experiences concerning the energy access for all at reasonable prices as a mean of fighting energy poverty.
